Here is the time to expect an iPad mini with a brilliant OLED display

Apple’s smallest tablet may soon get a major upgrade, with the iPad mini 8 expected to adopt OLED display technology by the end of 2026, according to Chinese leaker Instant Digital. In the third quarter of next year at the earliest, they said.

OLED iPad mini could be launched in late 2026 with premium features

The timing of the OLED iPad mini, according to Instant Digital, roughly matches previous reports from the Bloomberg and Korean media outlets, all pointing to a similar launch window for the refreshed device — though some only said “as early as next year.” But now we can expect the launch in the second half of the year. If these rumors turn out to be accurate, the iPad mini would become the second iPad model to feature OLED technology after the iPad Pro line. And here every iPad should get a screen. The upgrade is important because OLED screens provide a more lush visual experience, as described below.

Display and design improvements

Here’s why OLED technology represents a meaningful upgrade over traditional LCD displays. Each pixel can be controlled individually, resulting in more accurate colors, deeper blacks and excellent contrast ratios. The technology also offers faster response times, better viewing angles and enables more flexible device designs.

In addition to the display upgrade, Apple is reportedly working on making the iPad mini more durable with improved water resistance. To achieve this, the company developed a new vibration-based speaker system that eliminates traditional speaker openings – a common entry point for moisture.

Performance and price

Under the hood, the iPad mini is likely to feature an A19 Pro chip. This is the same processor found in the iPhone 17 Pro. The mid-range chip is built using an advanced third-generation 3-nanometer manufacturing process that offers slight improvements in both speed and power efficiency over previous models.

These premium features will probably cost something. BloombergMark Gurman has suggested that Apple could raise the price of the iPad mini by as much as $100. That would push the starting price from the current $499 to potentially $599 or more.

Release Timeline

The latest claims suggest that the earliest possible launch would be in the third quarter of 2026. However, it could slip to the fourth quarter. After the iPad mini, the iPad Air is expected to get OLED technology, probably arriving in 2027 or later.

Instant Digital has a mixed record of leak accuracy. The leak has successfully predicted some Apple releases in the past, including iPhone 14 color options and certain Apple Watch accessories. The convergence of multiple sources in similar timeframes lends credibility to these rumors.
