Apple has hit a patent action via Hey Siri and the virtual keyboard functions – 9to5mac
Part of the Nuance Communications (which in the first years was powered by Siri’s speech), Cerence is now Subdidia, which, according to its website, is working with “conversational AI to the world of cars and further”.
Today, Cerence has filed a lawsuit against Apple and accused it of violating several patents. Here are details.
In his complaint filed at the US District Court for the Western Texas Cerrence district, Apple says in 2021 about “potential acquisition or license”, including mobile text and awakening technology.
Clarence says Apple has offered more documents including:
- An overview of its patent portfolio;
- Tables showing that Apple quoted cerences in some of its own patent applications, some of which were caused by the fact that cerences already hold related patents;
- Cerence mapping patents mapped Apple products and functions that reportedly violated its patents.
Cerence says that this year there was a limited discussion with Apple: “But there was no resolution on the patent portfolio of mobile text.”
But the patent is out?
In short, patents related to virtual keyboards and “Hey Siri”.

Cerence asks the court in Texas to declare that Apple has blocked these patents, blocked them before further violation and ordered it to pay damage, ongoing license fees and more. Cerence also asks for a court jury.
It is worth noting that the US District Court for the Western Texas district was historically known as a friendly came to the holders of the patent, so Apple could be for a demanding dispute.
